English High School (fourth) is dedicated.

Architect: George Clough. Also home to Boston Latin School, it is located on Montgomery Street. Described as “the largest [building] in the world used as a free public school,” it opened on March 1, 1881. English High School moves to a another building (fifth) in the Fenway in 1954.* The Montgomery Street building is demolished and another school is built on the site in 1958.*
